After a horrific car wreck in 2000, Victoria Rosendahl found herself unable to pursue her favorite hobby - gardening. Her injuries limited her mobility, and kneeling and bending down were almost impossible. So, Victoria’s husband Mark designed and built an ingenious “no stoop, no bending” method of gardening - The Garden Rack.
Basically, the Garden Rack looks very much like a planting bench or table, but the similarities stop there. The Garden Rack can almost be described as a “greenhouse on a stand”.
From their website:
“If you’ve got 15 square feet — about the size of a standard washer and dryer sitting side by side — you can have a gorgeous garden. No matter where you live!
And if your ‘garden’ is more like a concrete jungle GardenRack is perfect for you, too. GardenRack performs double duty — it’s a beautiful addition to your landscape and an efficient and convenient place to grow flowers, veggies, and herbs without changing a thing in your yard.
Do you have a balcony or rooftop? GardenRack is the ideal fit for small spaces.
And GardenRack isn’t just for outside growing! Set it up in a spare room under lights to grow all year round. Imagine serving fresh lettuce from your garden in a salad on Valentine’s Day — in Vermont. No greenhouse required!”
The Garden Rack package comes with easy to follow plans and instructions. The plans require only a minimal amount of woodworking or carpentry skills, and should be easy and straightforward for the vast majority of gardeners. Almost all of the materials can be obtained at your local home improvement or hardware store, perhaps even a well stocked Wal-Mart or Costco.
Bonus reports and eBooks are included in the package. Their titles:
“How to Add a Trellis to Your GardenRack” ($14.95 value) adds a Vertical Gardening option…
“GardenRack Growing!” ($19.95 value) guides you through companion planting and soil selection…

Mark and Victoria also offer a free monthly email newsletter called “The Frugal Gardener” with money saving tips and free offers. You can sign up (no obligation!) at their website. Click here and scroll to the right to sign up for the newsletter.
I like the Garden Rack’s simplicity and functionality. It really does qualify as container gardening even though the Garden Rack doesn’t “look” like the traditional container. I think it is a very good approach for apartments, condominiums, very small properties; and elderly folks who are physically limited.
I give the Garden Rack 4 stars.
